Hugh Grant has opened up about his close friendship with his former girlfriend of 13 years Elizabeth Hurley. During an interview on Bravo's Watch What Happens Live, Hugh said that it was for the better that the pair went their separate ways in 2000, as they're now closer than ever. "Well, the funny thing is it did," said Hugh when asked why it didn't work out for him and Elizabeth. "She's still my absolute best friend. She's my number one person I call in a crisis."

Hugh and Elizabeth, who first started dating after meeting on the set of a Spanish production called Remando Al Viento in 1988, have maintained a close friendship since their split in May 2000 and the Hammersmith-born actor is godfather to Elizabeth's son Damian. During their time together Hugh and Elizabeth made a number of high-profile red carpet appearances and it was at the premiere of Hugh's film Four Weddings and a Funeral in March 1994 that Elizabeth wowed fashion fans in the black Versace dress with oversized gold safety pins that she became famous for.

During his TV appearance, Hugh also spoke about the leading ladies he has worked with over the years. "I love Bullock," he said of his Two Weeks Notice co-star Sandra Bullock. "I've always had a very soft spot for Sarah Jessica," he added of Sex and the City actress Sarah Jessica Parker, who he starred with in Did You Hear About The Morgans?.

Hugh also went on to say that he is keen to dispel the myth that he is as charming and romantic as some of his on-screen characters. "I get very annoyed when people think that I'm sort of nice or diffident or [a] polite English gentleman," he said. "All those phrases make me gnash my teeth. I'm a nasty piece of work and I think people should know that. It's enraging."
