She may have starred in Oscar-winning films like Dallas Buyers Club and be married to one of Hollywood's biggest stars, but Jennifer Garner insists that her favourite role is being a mother. The 42-year-old said that she has to "love" a film before accepting a role that will take her away from her children.

"I have such a big thing to balance [jobs] against that it has to be something I love so much." Jennifer told People at the launch of her new film Danny Collins.

The actress said she feels "surprised" but grateful every time she is offered a new job, and has to take time to consider the pros and cons before accepting the role.

Regardless of whether she is working or staying at home with her three children - nine-year-old Violet, five-year-old Seraphina and three-year-old Samuel – Jennifer said she tries to keep a consistent routine.

"I make sure everyone has notes for their lunch box every day and [figure out] who's having something special, and deciding who I read extra to [in the] morning."

The mother-of-three also has someone special to turn to for parenting advice – fellow actress Reese Witherspoon.

"If I run into Reese, she and I have so much to talk about," she said. "We'll be on the street corner and just be like, 'What do you do about this, and how did you handle this?' I'm so grateful for that specific kind of friend."

Jennifer married Batman star Ben Affleck in 2005, and has previously said that they try to take it in turns to work while one of them stays at home to look after the children.

"Ben is super busy and I'm super happy for him," she said. "I chose to stay home this year and just said, 'Go for it babe. Do it all. Do Gone Girl, do Batman, do The Accountant. Do everything.'

"I want that for him and I'm happy for him. And he says the same to me. Except that he's really busy. But he understands that when I really have to do it, we figure it out."
