Sam Smith has collaborated with John Legend to record a new version of his track Lay Me Down for Comic Relief. The duet, which they recorded together in LA, will be the official single for Red Nose Day 2015.
John and Sam will perform the ballad together for the first and only time at the London Palladium on Friday, and their one off duet will be broadcast live on Comic Relief – Face the Funny.
The original song features on Sam's Grammy-award winning album In The Lonely Hour, and the 22-year-old said it was "so exciting" to re-record the track with John Legend.
"Lay Me Down holds a very special place in my heart, not only did I perform it at the Brits I'm now going to perform it live on the Red Nose Day show with the extremely talented John Legend which is so exciting.
"I recently visited a Comic Relief funded project in my home town which supports the young LGBT community in London, I'm extremely proud that my single will help raise money for projects like this and many others in the UK and across Africa."
Meanwhile John revealed that he had been hoping to collaborate with Sam for a while.
"Sam is such a talented artist. We've been looking forward to working together for a while now. I'm so glad we could collaborate on such a great song and for such a great cause."
The special track was released on iTunes and in Sainsburys on Monday, with all proceeds going to the charity.
The duet follows a series of award wins for both Sam and John in recent weeks. Sam took home an incredible four Grammy awards and two Brits following the release of his debut album in 2014, while John was honoured with both an Oscar and Golden Globe for the track Glory from the movie Selma.
Sam and John will join other stars including Cheryl Fernandez-Versini, Dermot O'Leary and Idris Elba for Comic Relief on Friday. The broadcast will also see much-loved comedies including Little Britain and Mr Bean make a comeback for charity.
