Shakira's charity baby shower raises thousands and hailed 'her biggest hit'

April 9, 2015

Shakira and Gerard Piqué have outdone themselves and achieved their "biggest hit" and "most spectacular goal" to date. The couple, who welcomed their second son earlier this year, threw a charity baby shower for UNICEF ahead of the birth, and the results of their success are just coming in.

Over £101,000 has been raised for the charity, thanks to donations from Shakira and Gerard's fans.

The Waka Waka singer and the FC Barcelona football player had asked people to donate money and supplies to UNICEF and help less privileged children around the world, instead of receiving gifts for their own newborn Sasha.

Shakira and Gerard Piqué also hosted a UNICEF baby shower for their first-born Milan

"Gerard and I are so happy to know that so many kids will benefit from the generosity of all of those who have participated in the World Baby Shower movement," said Shakira, who has been a Goodwill Ambassador for UNICEF since 2003.

"We've raised enough polio vaccines to be able to vaccinate 40,000 children and enough therapeutic food packets to feed another 15,000 – among other things that will now go to children in need," she said.

The Colombian beauty had also encouraged fellow mums to host their own charity baby showers, and more than 500 mothers did so, Shakira revealed.

UNICEF confirmed that the gifts from the supporters of the World Baby Shower will benefit tens of thousands of youngsters, by protecting them against disease and malnutrition. Items donated included blankets, polio vaccines, measles vaccines, midwifery kits, family water kits and therapeutic food for the severely malnourished.

Shakira, however, added that there was still a lot to do, and that it wasn't too late to join the World Baby Shower movement.

"Our greatest hope is that the world baby shower continues moving forward," she said. "And that more mothers organise their own baby showers until every new mother and newborn worldwide can access the same vital life-saving tools to enjoy a safe and healthy childhood."

Sasha's baby shower was the second for Shakira and Gerard, who held a similar one two years ago for their first-born Milan.

"This is an extraordinary show of generosity on the part of Shakira and Gerard, but also by the thousands of people who went out of their way to share in this event by giving to others," said Shanelle Hall, head of UNICEF's global supply operations. "You could say this is Shakira's biggest hit, and Gerard's most spectacular goal."
