The Coachella crowd were not the only ones shocked by Madonna's onstage kiss with Drake on Sunday. The 28-year-old has spoken out about the now infamous moment and revealed that he wasn't expecting the kiss either.

Sharing an Instagram photo from the performance on Tuesday, Drake wrote: "Don't misinterpret my shock!! I got to make out with the queen Madonna and I feel 100 about that forever. Thank you @madonna."

Madonna stunned fans when she made a surprise appearance during Drake's set at the Californian festival, planting a kiss on the singer while she performed a medley of her hits including Human Nature and Express Yourself.

Drake's reaction led many to speculate that he didn't enjoy the kiss, but it appears he was simply taken by surprise by the Material Girl singer. Sources close to the star told TMZ that the kiss wasn't planned, and Madonna was originally meant to dance around Drake while he sat in a chair on the stage.

After receiving criticism from fans on social media, Madonna hit back by posting her own Instagram photo which said: "If you don't like me and still watch everything I do…You're a fan."

The 56-year-old also received support from Rita Ora, who praised the star for fighting what she termed as "ageist battles".

Drake has said he was shocked by Madonna's kiss during their Coachella performance

"Thank you for fighting all these ageist battles, and paving a way, that just maybe one day, all of us 'Younger' Artists won't have too in the future! @madonna," the singer wrote, referencing criticism that Madonna shouldn't have kissed a performer half her age.

Madonna is known for her tendency to shock with her performances - she famously shared a kiss with Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera during their performance at the MTV Video Music Awards in 2003. The mother-of-four also startled viewers when she took a tumble during her performance at the Brit Awards in February.
