Blake Lively reveals awkward encounter with President Obama

April 24, 2015

It was a memorable moment, but perhaps not for the best reasons – Blake Lively's recent meeting with President Barack Obama left the Gossip Girl actress feeling somewhat embarrassed. The 27-year-old star, who is currently promoting her new film The Age of Adaline, revealed the details of her awkward encounter with Obama during an appearance on Late Night with Seth Meyers."I had my whole speech planned," said Blake. "And then he came to me and I just was like... 'I... hope...' It was awful."

Blake Lively's meeting with Obama didn't quite go according to plan

Despite having frozen mid-sentence, Blake tried to recover by telling Obama that he had once called her actor husband Ryan Reynolds during his first run for president in 2008."You left my husband a voicemail," she said. "And he was like 'Oh, cool.'"But before the politician had a chance to respond, Blake made the situation a little more uncomfortable, saying: "He deleted it because you were just a senator then."And then I was like oh that was bad so I was like 'Well he didn't know you would be president, I mean who thought that you would be president um...'"

President Obama left Blake's husband Ryan Reynolds an "incredibly funny" voicemail

In a bid to turn the situation around, Blake asked if Mr Obama would leave her husband another voicemail. When the 53-year-old then asked for her phone, Blake realised that it had in fact been confiscated upon her arrival at the dinner. "I said, 'I can't [get the phone] you took it', and he replied 'Well go and ask for it back' and I said 'No you're the president you ask for it back' so then he started shouting across the room for it. "Obama did in fact leave Ryan an "incredibly funny voicemail", although, in a fitting end to the awkward encounter, Blake revealed that instead of being pictured shaking Obama's hand, a photographer snapped her just as she was looking down at her phone instead of at Obama while he was speaking to her.

Host Seth couldn't resist joking that Blake's daughter James would obviously grow up with great etiquette skills if she's anything like her mother."That poor child," she responded. "Can we delete this [interview] from the internet?"
