May 1, 2015

Britney Spears has had to cancel several of her upcoming Las Vegas residency shows after falling during a performance of (You Drive Me) Crazy. A video of the 33-year-old singer falling emerged on Wednesday, and on Friday doctors confirmed that Britney would need to cancel shows for recovery time.

Britney's fall came during her show at Planet Hollywood as her heel came down wrong on the ground during a dance routine. As she crouched on the stage, the singer continued her performance but could clearly be seen grimacing and inspecting her ankle.

The star later took to social media to apologise to her fans for cancelling the Friday and Saturday shows: "Breaks my heart to share this news. After hurting my ankle last night my doctor has advised me not to perform this weekend #Heartbroken."

She continued: "Your kind words mean everything to me! I'm rescheduling this weekend’s shows and will let ya'll know when we have the new dates. xoxo."

Planet Hollywood confirmed the news with a statement reading: "Britney injured her ankle during her performance Wednesday evening and her doctor has advised her not to perform Friday and Saturday evening so that she may heal."

The injury comes eighteen months into Britney's two-year residency. In 2004, the Oops, I Did It Again singer injured her knee which led to eight to twelve weeks of rehabilitation and the cancellation of her Onyx Hotel tour.

Britney's residency was announced in September 2013 in a deal worth a reported £19million ($30million). The American musician revealed her exciting news live from the Mojave Desert on ABC's Good Morning America after arriving via helicopter in a spectacular publicity stunt.

She follows in the footsteps of legendary singers including Elton John, Rod Stewart and Céline Dion who have all taken up residencies in the city.

Britney began the residency in December 2013, and said at the time: "I'm going to definitely do the greatest hits but I'm going to have to put some of my new material in it to just keep it fresh."
