George and Amal Clooney made their debut at the Met Gala on Monday evening, and they didn't disappoint. The power couple caused a stir as they arrived for the fashion event, Amal cementing her style icon status in a beautiful crimson strapless Maison Margiela Couture gown by John Galliano featuring a sequin covered bodice and a layered and ruffled skirt.It was a standout look for Amal, who wore her long hair down and over one shoulder and accessorised with jewelled earrings and a matching red sequinned clutch. Her husband George, suave as ever in a traditional black Armani tuxedo, looked understandably proud to stand by her side as they posed for pictures together at the Chinese-themed gala.

George and Amal were by no means the only high-profile couple to attend the Met Gala. Robert Pattinson and singer FKA twigs chose the New York event to make their red carpet debut, with singer twigs, 27, rising to the occasion with a daring 'Lovers' dress by designer Christopher Kane. She accessorised with a very special piece of jewellery - the unusual ring, featuring a swirl of diamonds in a white gold setting, with which Robert presented her when he asked for her hand in marriage.Also officially confirming their relationship were Uma Thurman and hotelier Andre Balazs. Following reports that they have rekindled their on-off romance, Uma and Andre arrived hand-in-hand for the gala, with the Kill Bill star showcasing her incredible figure in a white gown that featured a thigh-high split and a flowing train.

Other couples enjoying a glamorous date night in the Big Apple included Sofia Vergara and her fiancé Joe Manganiello, Kanye West and Kim Kardashian, who caused a stir in a daring, sheer lace Roberto Cavalli gown, Oscar-winner Eddie Redmayne and his wife Hannah Bagshawe, and Helen Mirren who was escorted by her husband Taylor Hackford.The 69-year-old actress looked incredible in a bright red gown that featured lace panelling as she stepped out for the gala, which costs $25,000 a ticket, and this year was themed 'China: Through The Looking Glass'.
