Welsh singer Tom Jones was born in 1940 and became hugely popular in the mid-1960s.

His gravelly distinctive voice has made him on the world's best loved singers, and he has sung many genres of music, including pop, country, dance, r'n'b and gospel.

Tom married his childhood sweetheart Linda at the age of 16 when she was pregnant with their son, Mark. Tom was soon spotted singing in the working men's clubs of Wales and at the height of his fame in the 1960s and 1970s was often found singing in Caesar's Palace in Las Vegas.

It was here where Tom became good friends with Elvis Presley and Frank Sinatra, although he has spoken publicly of the fact that Frank and Tom didn't share the same values musically, but that Elvis was on the same wavelength as himself.

Between 1969 and 1971 Tom hosted a successful television variety show called This Is Tom Jones, and garnered him first Golden Globe nomination for his role.

In the 1980s Tom moved his family to Los Angeles and in 1989 received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, but in 1999 Tom began to make his comeback, with his 34th album, Reload, going straight into the UK charts at number one.

The same year Tom was awarded an OBE and in 2006 was given a Knighthood from Queen Elizabeth II for services to music.

Tom made his hugely successful return to television in 2012 when he became a judge and mentor on the BBC reality show The Voice.
