James Corden has received an OBE for services to drama at Buckingham Palace. The 36-year-old, who is currently hosting The Late, Late Show in America, was presented with his honour by Princess Anne on Thursday morning.

The actor and comedian was joined by his wife Julia Carey for the Investiture ceremony, which also saw Esther Rantzen named a Dame and former Liberal Democrats leader Lord Paddy Ashdown presented with the Order of the Companions of the Honour.

James ensured he looked smart for his day at the palace, donning a blue suit and tie with a lilac shirt. He said that it was "overwhelming" to be awarded the honour, telling Press Association: "It's overwhelming to come back from Los Angeles and then be stood in Buckingham Palace receiving such a thing.

"I feel very undeserved but grateful nonetheless."

He also joked that Buckingham Palace "doesn't look too shabby" after reports that it requires a £150million refurbishment.

"I mean, I'll be honest, the bits I've seen – it doesn't look too shabby," he said. "It looks alright to me. I mean, it's amazing… it's an incredible building."

The Gavin and Stacey star had hinted that it was set to be a special day on Twitter on Thursday morning, telling his fans: "I've a feeling today won't be like most other Thursdays."

In December, when it was announced that he was to be made an OBE, James had said he was "thrilled" at the news.

"I'm thrilled, overwhelmed and honoured to be recognised in such a way. My family are very proud. My mum is already fretting about what to wear."

James is not the only star of the BBC comedy series to be honoured for their services to drama. His former co-star and ex-girlfriend Sheridan Smith received an OBE from Prince William in May.
