Michael Douglas on family life and Catherine Zeta-Jones: 'We had a little bump in the road'

June 28, 2015

Fans were distressed when Michael Douglas and Catherine Zeta-Jones briefly separated in 2013, but after a few months apart the couple reconciled and are now stronger than ever. In a new interview Michael has spoken about overcoming that difficult period – and how proud he is of his two children with the Welsh actress.

"We had a little bump in the road," Michael told Mail Online. "The problem in this business is that everything is so public. I love Catherine as much, more than I ever have. And hopefully the feeling's mutual.

"We worked things out – if both people want to work something out and make it better, you can do it. You can't do it if it's just one person."

"She's comfortable with who she is and she's stunning looking," said Michael Douglas of his wife Catherine Zeta-Jones

"We're about to have our 15th wedding anniversary and it feels great," he added.

Michael also spoke about how public their split was, admitting: "I so regretted any embarrassment that it caused Catherine, and her family."

The 70-year-old actor is head over heels in love with his beautiful wife, who shares the same birthday as him but is 25 years younger.

On the subject of age discrimination in the movie world, Michael said: "I think for all young actresses who are beautiful, age is not the most welcoming part. But she's very comfortable with it and I think she's comfortable with who she is. She's still stunning looking."

The couple are parents to teenagers Dylan and Carys and like any other proud parent, Michael opened up about his family life and his children's various achievements.

"Carys and her mum are very tight, very close and they're both very good dancers," said the two-time Academy Award winner. "I take Carys to dance and I take her to Broadway shows – that's something we share together.

"Dylan plays the guitar, he's really into Talking Heads. And he and I are both scuba divers, we just came back from Costa Rica. He went down a hundred feet, he's so good at it, and it's just magical down there."

Michael was recently supported by his family at an awards ceremony in Israel, where he was given the Genesis Prize by the Genesis Prize Foundation – a £635,000 reward to someone who has attained excellence in their field and can be a role model for a new generation of Jews.

In his speech the Behind the Candelabra star revealed that his 13-year-old daughter Carys would soon be having her bat mitzvah, while older brother Dylan had already celebrated his bar mitzvah.
