Omar Sharif, star of Lawrence of Arabia, dies aged 83

Omar Sharif, star of popular films Lawrence of Arabia and Doctor Zhivago, has died aged 83, his agent confirmed to Associated Press.

The actor's longtime agent, Steve Kenis, revealed that the star, whose birth name is Michel Demitri Chalhoub, died of a heart attack in a Cairo hospital.

The Egyptian-born actor had been suffering from Alzheimer's disease, his agent confirmed last May, after his only son, Tarek El-Sharif, revealed the diagnosis to a newspaper.

Omar began his film career in 1953 but it wasn't until 1962 that he landed the role of Sharif Ali in David Lean's Lawrence of Arabia.

The performance earned him a Best Supporting Actor Oscar nomination and a Golden Globe Award for Best Supporting Actor – Motion Picture.
