Sophia dated Dan from February 2013 to February 2014, and remained close friends following their split. While Dan's death was painful for the One Tree Hill actress, it has also taught her some valuable lessons.
She explained: "The crazy thing is that since Dan died, the lessons have come like Mack trucks. There is no next time. There is no excuse to wait a day to do what you want to do and change the way that you want to change."

It is not the first time Sophia has paid tribute to the 33-year-old. The actress posted a heartfelt Instagram tribute to Dan following his death in April, writing there were "no adequate words" to describe how she felt.
"Today I find myself attempting to pick up the pieces of my heart that have broken into such tiny shards, I'll likely never find them all," she explained, adding: "He was one of the great loves of my life. He was one of my truest friends. He was an incredible brother, a brilliant engineer, and a damn good man. I'm devastated and simultaneously so deeply grateful to have known and loved him."
