Benedict Cumberbatch kisses wife Sophie Hunter after performing to celebrity-packed audience on Hamlet's opening night

Having just left the stage after one of the biggest nights of his career, Benedict Cumberbatch was reunited with his proud wife Sophie Hunter on Tuesday, after impressing a celebrity and critic-packed audience on the official opening night of Hamlet in London.Sophie, who welcomed the couple's son in June, was among those who watched the production, alongside Benedict's parents and some of his famous friends. The striking 37-year-old is no stranger to the world of theatre, thanks to her career as an acclaimed stage director, and she couldn't have looked prouder of her husband as they posed together at an afterparty.

Equally as delighted was Benedict's mother, actress Wanda Ventham, who described her son as "a bloody good Hamlet" following the show. Benedict's Sherlock co-star Mark Gatiss, meanwhile, said he had been "magnificent"."I always knew he had it in him," he told the BBC. "We're all very proud and impressed. "Other famous names in the audience at the Barbican on Tuesday included fellow Sherlock actor Martin Freeman and Downton Abbey's Dan Stevens, who attended with his singer wife Susie Hariet.The modern-dress production of Hamlet, directed by Lyndsey Turner, has been hailed as the fastest-selling play in British history.

It sees Benedict's Prince of Denmark make a number of costume changes, with clothing including a David Bowie T-shirt, a scarlet military jacket and a hoodie. He appears in the opening scene listening to Nat King Cole's Nature Boy on an old gramophone.The rest of the cast includes Ciaran Hinds as Claudius, Anastasia Hille as Gertrude, Sian Brooke as Ophelia and Leo Bill as Horatio.Benedict, 39, was last seen on stage in 2011, in the National Theatre's production of Frankenstein, directed by Danny Boyle. He won an Olivier Award for his performance.
