Benedict Cumberbatch and Sophie Hunter have been as discreet as ever when it comes to their newborn son, announcing his birth with the minimum of fuss in June. Now it is being reported that they have named him Christopher Carlton Cumberbatch.

Christopher is the name of a character whom the actor portrayed in a Tom Stoppard play. Meanwhile, Carlton is a family middle name given to Benedict himself, his father and grandfather.

The couple have looked closer than ever since becoming parents, making a loved up appearance a few weeks ago at the Serpentine Gallery Summer Party in Kensington Gardens.

The Imitation Game actor could not keep his eyes off his wife, who was showing no sign of sleepless nights. Sophie looked as stylish as ever in a full-skirted navy midi dress which she teamed with black heels and a clutch bag.

The actor is currently riding high after receiving rave reviews for his version of Hamlet – which prompted fans to queue around the clock outside the theatre in the hope of getting tickets.

Then shortly after the birth of his son, the proud father was named a CBE in the Queen's birthday honours. He and elegant theatre director Sophie wed in a romantic Valentine's Day ceremony and welcome their first child just as Benedict's Hollywood career was skyrocketing.

The thespian, who spent months playing Richard III for BBC, revealed earlier in the year that he was more than ready to take a break and prepare for his new role as a father.

"I've been on muddy fields and on horseback playing Richard III for the BBC and I've been on more flights to Los Angeles and back than I can count," the star told the Daily Mail in February. "All of that has been special, but I'm ready to have a couple of months to ourselves to prepare for the baby and do some nesting. It's a real-life role, not a part."
