Sam Smith says his voice is stronger than ever following his vocal surgery. The Stay With Me singer was forced to undergo surgery in May after a small haemorrhage was discovered on his vocal cords, but he has described the ordeal as a "blessing in disguise".

"In terms of my health and my voice, it was a massive blessing in disguise," he said during a performance for Radio 2 at the BBC's Radio Theatre in London. "I went to the throat doctor who looked after Adele's voice. I was in really good hands, so I never doubted my voice would come back.

Sam Smith says his voice is stronger than ever after surgery

"It was just the pain of having to reschedule stuff. Even now it's changed the way I feel about my voice. I'm a bit more scared than normal which is a good thing, I guess."

He added: "I feel stronger in the way that I'm singing. It's more reliable."

Sam was forced to postpone dates on his Australian tour in May due to the surgery, and was unable to speak for three weeks as he rested following the operation. He likened getting his voice back to the moment that Ariel recovers her own voice in Disney's The Little Mermaid, telling his followers: "I CAN SPEAK AGAIN!!!!!!"

The man who made Sam's recovery possible was Dr Steven Zeitels, who has performed the same procedure on the likes of Adele, Lionel Richie, Julie Andrews and Steven Tyler. Sam posted a photo of himself with the doctor on his Instagram account. "Completely overwhelmed. Thank you so much Doctor Zeitels for everything. You have truly saved me this past few months," a grateful Sam wrote.

"Such an amazing man. You truly truly truly don't know what you got until you lose it. I have fallen in love with music all over again over this past month, and more than ever I feel so blessed to be able to sing and do what I love every day xx."

Sam is not the only star to undergo vocal surgery in recent months; All About That Bass singer Meghan Trainor also had surgery on her throat this week, sharing before and after photos with her fans on Instagram.
