Romeo Beckham proved lucky for the England football team when he led them out in a match against Switzerland as an official mascot. Returning to Wembley which was the scene of so many triumphs for his father David Beckham, the teenager walked out on to the turf holding hands with captain Wayne Rooney, who later scored his 50th goal for England, a historic achievement that set a new record. The side also went on to win their match 2-0.

Looking proud and excited, Romeo had walked out at the start of the game wearing the Three Lions strip. Becks explained that he had pulled a few strings to arrange the treat as a late 13th birthday present for his son.

He told ITV: "Romeo is obviously very lucky as part of his 13th birthday – because of a few connections still at the FA – is one of the mascots, so he is excited."

Wayne was equally thrilled with the match. Afterwards he admitted being a "bit emotional" when the goal went it, adding: "it’s a huge honour and one I am extremely proud of."

His wife Coleen couldn't hide her excitement either, tweeting her followers to tell them: "So proud, job done. Off home now with England's all time top goal scorer."

Romeo's brothers Brooklyn and Cruz were in the stands along with David to witness the special game. The clan has united in the past week to give the youngster a birthday to remember after he turned 13 on 1 September following their return from a summer of fun in Los Angeles. His party was held at a restaurant that had been decorated beautifully with balloons.

Victoria posted a picture of the birthday boy and his two brothers, writing wistfully: "My babies are getting so big!" She shared another one of her kissing Romeo on the cheek, with the caption: "Happy birthday baby boy. We r all so proud and love you so, so much. x 13 today!!! X mummy".
