Sam Smith has unveiled his highly anticipated theme song for the new James Bond film Spectre. Writing's On The Wall was played on Friday morning on Nick Grimshaw's Radio 1 breakfast show – and has already has the seal of approval from one important listener, former Bond actor Sir Roger Moore, who described it as "very haunting and wonderfully orchestrated".The song, whose full version runs for four minutes and 38 seconds, opens with the line, "I've been here before / But always hit the floor."
It continues: "I've spent a lifetime running, and I always get away. But with you I'm feeling something that makes me want to stay."
Sam Smith has released his theme song for Spectre, titled Writing's On The Wall
Sam is the first solo male British act to perform a Bond theme song since 1964, when Sir Tom Jones sang in the opening credits for Thunderball. The last Bond theme song, Adele's 2012 Skyfall, peaked at number two in the UK singles chart, and earned the British songstress an Academy Award. No Bond song has ever reached the top of the UK singles chart. The enormity of being asked to write the new Bond theme song was not lost on 23-year-old Sam. Speaking to the Sun, he said that trying to match the "legacy" of former iconic Bond tracks was "intense". "With this song I don't care about it charting and things like that. I just care about doing the legacy proud," he said. "The pressure to deliver a Bond song that stands against all the rest feels quite intense. "The British star previously stated that he and his songwriting partner Jimmy Napes wanted to create a song that was "timelessly classic"."This isn't about me, about my life," Sam said in a promotional video for the song. "I just hope people listen to it and think, 'That's Bond'."
