Jim Carrey has said he is "shocked and saddened" by the death of his ex-girlfriend Cathriona White. Cathriona, 30, was found in her Los Angeles apartment on Monday after a suspected overdose. Police have said they are treating her death as a suicide.In an emotional statement released shortly after the news broke, 53-year-old Jim said he is "deeply saddened by the passing of my sweet Cathriona".

"She was a truly kind and delicate Irish flower, too sensitive for this soil, to whom loving and being loved was all that sparkled," he said. “My heart goes out to her family and friends and to everyone who loved and cared about her. We have all been hit by a lightning bolt."According to the Irish Independent, makeup artist Cathriona – a native of Tipperary in Ireland – first met Jim on a film set in 2012. They reportedly dated from most of 2013 before reuniting again earlier this year.In May, the couple were spotted walking hand-in-hand in New York. But, TMZ reports they called time on their relationship just recently.

Cathriona, who celebrated her birthday earlier this month, posted a worrying message on Twitter just three days before her death. "Signing off Twitter, I hope I have been a light to my nearest and dearest. Love to you all," she wrote.That same day, she also shared a quote from poet W. B. Keats, alongside a photo of a vase of flowers. "Faeries, come take me out of this dull world, For I would ride with you upon the wind, Run on the top of the dishevelled tide, And dance upon the mountains like a flame," she wrote.
