Revealed: Why Adele used a flip phone in music video for Hello

October 25, 2015

When Adele debuted the music video for her new single Hello on Thursday, many fans took to Twitter to discuss the fact that the singer had used a flip phone in one of the shots instead of a more modern device.

Many fans theorized that an old phone had been used to show the footage was set in the past. However, the video's director, Xavier Dolan, has explained it's simply because he doesn't like "filming modern phones".

"'The real explanation is that I never like filming modern phones or cars. They're so implanted in our lives that when you see them you're reminded you're in reality", Xavier told the LA Times.

"If you see an iPhone or a Toyota in a movie, they're anti-narrative, they take you out of the story. If I put an iPhone or a modern car in a movie it feels like I'm making a commercial."

Adele's music video has been watched 51 million times on YouTube since its release on Thursday.

Hello is the lead single from her long-awaited third album 25, which comes almost five years after her last. The singer made her Instagram debut last week to announce that it will be out on 20 November. Within an hour her new Instagram profile had already attracted close to 20,000 followers. By Sunday, she had over 1.2million followers.

The announcement came 24 hours after she released an emotional statement on Twitter, confirming that 25 and will be a "make-up record" that focuses on the point in her life where she became a "fully-fledged adult".

The statement explained that the new disc will not dwell on the past but instead focus on the future.
