Cheryl Fernandez-Versini, Rita Ora and Caroline Flack are just some of the celebrities who have taken part in a campaign for the Royal British Legion. After research showed that 38 percent of people are not planning to observe the two-minute silence at 11 am on 11 November, several stars have posed with a remembrance poppy over their lips in a bid to raise awareness.
The campaign hopes to remind the public that silence is not just a time for keeping quiet, but for stopping everyday activities, as set out by King George V in November 1919, in tribute to those who gave their lives fighting for our country.
Olly Murs, Freddie Flintoff and Alesha Dixon are amongst the celebrities who have appeared in a film that aims to raise awareness of the two-minute silence, which takes place on the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month.
The Royal British Legion is also asking members of the public to get involved by sharing pictures of themselves with a poppy over their lips to demonstrate their intention to join in the two-minute silence ahead of Armistice Day.
The Rt Revd Nigel McCulloch, National Chaplain to The Royal British Legion, said: "Modern life is lived at an incredibly fast pace, but it is hugely important that people find the time to remember and respect those that have sacrificed – and continue to make sacrifice – in the service of our country."
Over the weekend Cheryl took a break from her X Factor duties to pay tribute to the fallen on Remembrance Sunday.
The Geordie beauty posted a photo on Instagram of a red poppy against a black-and-white background, and captioned it: "Today. A day we will always remember and honour the sacrifices made by all involved. Remembering our fallen soldiers who paid the ultimate price to protect and save our future, which we live in today. #lestweforget #remberancesunday."
