Alex Pettyfer reveals why he and Channing Tatum don't get along

December 1, 2015

Alex Pettyfer has admitted that he didn't get on with his Magic Mike co-star Channing Tatum. The 25-year-old, whose character was noticeably absent from the sequel Magic Mike XXL, confessed Channing didn't like him "for many reasons".

Speaking about their relationship with Bret Easton Ellis for his podcast B.E.E, Alex revealed that Channing had initially been reluctant to work with him on the film because he had a difficult reputation, but went ahead anyway. As a result, Alex's reps advised him to keep a low profile during filming.

"I was scared to speak," Alex said. "I actually did my work and I sat in the corner and listened to music because I had been told anything I did was wrong by my reps. I was very insecure as a human being."

Alex said his behaviour led his co-stars to believe he thought he was better than anybody else, with problems escalating when he failed to pay rent while staying at the apartment of one of Channing's friends in New York.

The I Am Number Four star lived in the flat with his ex-fiancée Riley Keough, but when his cousin passed away unexpectedly he forgot to make the rent payment.

"I was devastated and was dealing with family trauma and forgot about the situation," Alex said, explaining that Channing had sent him an email telling him to pay up. The British actor confessed that he took the email the wrong way and refused to pay the money, leading to a frosty reception when he returned to the Magic Mike set.

Despite the fall-out, Alex says he wouldn't change the experience and believes it changed him for the better.

"Channing was actually an incredible influence on me because after this whole situation happened – this was kind of the end of my immaturity and all my experiences put into one – and Steven Soderbergh [Magic Mike director] was a huge part of that as well and I owe my life to that man.

"It was an incredible experience making Magic Mike. I wouldn't replace it for anything."
