Coldplay have said they are "excited and honoured and thrilled" after being confirmed as the headliners for the Super Bowl 50 half-time show. The band shared the news on Twitter, with frontman Chris Martin describing the honour as "the greatest moment" in the band's career.

In a promotional video, Chris said: "We are so excited and honoured and thrilled to be playing the half-time show. It's going to be wonderful and I hope we see you there."

He also added that he was "really, really nervous" about the performance.

Meanwhile the band's artistic director, Phil Harvey, revealed that there would be a "special guest" during Coldplay's performance, but wouldn't disclose who it was. Insiders have suggested to Us Weekly that former headliner Bruno Mars will have some involvement in the show, along with other "friends of the group".

Coldplay follow in the footsteps of Katy Perry, who drew in a record 118.5 million viewers in the US for her half-time performance in 2015. Other performers to be given the honour in recent years include Madonna and Beyoncé Knowles, who features on the track Hymn for the Weekend on Coldplay's new album.

The band are said to be designing a show that sums up the NFL's On the Fifty campaign – honouring the past, recognising the present and looking ahead to the next 50 years of Super Bowl games.

The performance will take place during the highly-anticipated game at San Francisco's Levi's Stadium on Sunday 7 February.
