Miley Cyrus and Liam Hemsworth have sparked rumours that they are rekindling their romance after celebrating the New Year together in Australia. The former couple joined a group including Liam's brothers Luke and Chris Hemsworth at the Falls Music Festival in Byron Bay on Saturday, where they were reportedly spotted "cuddling and kissing".

Although the pair avoided being photographed together, the Australian Daily Telegraph reported that they appeared "affectionate" as they watched Disclosure's 90-minute set. A photo shared on the official Falls Festival Instagram account also confirmed that Miley had attended the event, with the caption: "The Hemsworth brothers dropping in at #fallsfestival last night with pal Miley Cyrus."

The Wrecking Ball singer also joined Liam's family at a Wild West themed New Year's Eve party hosted by Chris and his wife Elsa Pataky, further fuelling speculation that a reconciliation is on the cards. Elsa shared a photo of herself and Miley on Instagram on Monday, writing: "I love people I can be crazy with!" and adding the hashtag "best friends".

Miley and Liam began dating after meeting on the set of The Last Song, and got engaged in 2012. Despite calling off their engagement in September 2013, the pair have remained close friends ever since and have spoken out about their lasting affection for one another in interviews.

"Me and Liam are still so close and we love each other," Miley told ELLE UK in September, while just weeks later Liam told Men's Fitness that his feelings for his former fiancée would never change.

"We were together five years, so I don't think those feelings will ever change," he said. "And that's good because that proves to me that it was real. It wasn't just a fling."

The Hunger Games star is previously said to have told friends he and Miley shared an "instantaneous and powerful connection" and will "always be best friends", and even supported Miley through her break-up from boyfriend Patrick Schwarzenegger in April 2015.
