Jim Carrey is back to doing what he does best. The 53-year-old funnyman made his first public appearance since the death of his on-off girlfriend Cathriona White at the Golden Globes on Sunday night – and soon had the audience in stitches as he presented the award for Best Musical or Comedy. The actor was introduced to the stage as "two-time Golden Globe winner Jim Carrey" – and, clearly amused by the title, decided to run with it during his address.

Jim Carrey made a welcome return to the public eye at the Golden Globes

"Thank you, I am two-time Golden Globe winner Jim Carrey," he smiled as he addressed the star-studded room. "You know, when I go to sleep at night, I'm not just a guy going to sleep – I'm two-time Golden Globe winner Jim Carrey going to get some well-needed shut eye."When I dream, I don't just dream any old dream," he continued to laughter from the crowd. "I dream about being three-time Golden Globe actor Jim Carrey. Because then I would be enough. It would finally be true and I could stop this terrible search, for what I know ultimately won't fulfil me. "But these are important, these awards – I don't want you to think that just because if you blew up our solar system alone you wouldn't be able to find us or any of you in human history with the naked eye. But from our perspective, this is huge."

Jim has been nominated for six Globes in total – and is among the few who have won the Best Actor in both the drama and comedy categories; in 1998 for The Truman Show and in 1999 for Man on the Moon. The star chose not to walk the red carpet at Sunday's event, which marked his first official public appearance since the shocking suicide of Cathriona in September. Jim helped to assist the 30-year-old heartbroken family with the funeral arrangements, and also served as a pallbearer at the service in Cathriona’s native Ireland in October.Jim and Cathriona dated on-and-off for three years between 2012 and 2015, and the actor was completely devastated by her death. In a statement released shortly after the news broke, he said: "She was a truly kind and delicate Irish flower, too sensitive for this soil, to whom loving and being loved was all that sparkled. My heart goes out to her family and friends and everyone that loved and cared for her. We have all been hit with a lightning bolt."
