Iman inundated with messages of support from celebrity friends

Fans around the nation are mourning the loss of David Bowie, and they're also sparing many thoughts for the family he left behind. The singer's wife Iman, their daughter Alexandria and his son Duncan have been receiving messages of support from the celebrity world, with stars expressing their condolences.

Madonna, whose first concert she ever saw in Detroit was David Bowie's, shared a throwback photo of herself and Iman on Twitter. "With the beautiful Iman," she wrote. "David Bowie's stunning and gracious wife raising money for Aids back in the day!"

The Like A Virgin singer also posted another photo with David himself, writing: "So lucky to have met you!!!! Hot Tramp I love you so!"

Alicia Keys, who had the honour of sharing the stage with the late artist, posted a photo of the pair performing. "Sending prayers and love to my beautiful friend IMAN and her family on this day!" wrote Alicia.

Zoe Saldana uploaded a touching photo of David and Iman. "We are with you and your family. Your union was an inspiration to us all," she wrote, following a quote by Lebanese poet Khalil Gibran.

Cyndi Lauper, who is set to perform at David's memorial concert in New York in March, tweeted to Iman: "I'm so sorry for your loss. Xx."

The couple were married for nearly 24 years

Boy George wrote on Twitter, "I'm thinking of you and your family today. Love & light" while Golden Globe winner Taraji Henson tweeted that she was praying for Iman's "peace and strength".

Alongside a snap of the couple, who were married for nearly 24 years, Coco Rocha posted: "The world lost an amazing artist but my thoughts are with Iman who lost a husband and best friend."

In her latest Instagram posts, Iman seemed to know that the end was near for her beloved husband. While David's millions of fans were not aware of his deteriorating health, Iman and her family knew that the singer was struggling in his battle with cancer.

The Somali supermodel shared a number of photographs of her husband in the days leading up to his death – ranging from his Ziggy Stardust days to a snapshot of David on stage in the Eighties with Tina Turner.

On the day of her husband's death, Iman posted a photo that read: "The struggle is real, but so is God." She poignantly captioned it "Rise".
