Emma Thompson pens emotional tribute to friend Alan Rickman

Among the many tributes that have been paid to the late Alan Rickman, the poignant message written by heartbroken Emma Thompson stands out. Emma acted alongside Alan in a number of films – including Harry Potter, Love Actually and Sense and Sensibility – and the pair became great friends over the course of their careers. Following the news of his death on Thursday at the age of 69, the actress penned a moving tribute to the screen and stage star. "Alan was my friend and so this is so hard to write because I have just kissed him goodbye," she began.

What I remember most in this moment of painful leave-taking is his humour, intelligence, wisdom and kindness. His capacity to fell you with a look or lift you with a word. The intransigence which made him the great artist he was – his ineffable and cynical wit, the clarity with which he saw most things, including me, and the fact he never spared me the view. I learned a lot from him."He was the finest of actors and directors. I couldn't wait to see what he was going to do with his face next. I consider myself hugely privileged to have worked with him so many times and to have been directed by him.

He was, above all things, a rare and unique human being, and we shall not see his like again."Emma was one of a number of big names who have expressed their shock and sadness following the news that Alan had lost his battle with cancer. Daniel Radcliffe, J.K Rowling, Emma Watson and Matthew Lewis all took to social media to honour the actor, as did the likes of Stephen Fry, Charlie Sheen and Jamie Lee Curtis.
