It's finally happening – Mean Girls is being adapted into a musical. Tina Fey, who wrote the film's script, has confirmed that she is working on the project but that it could take a "few years" before it's actually finished.

Speaking at a press conference to promote her new film Whiskey Tango Foxtrot, Tina revealed: "My husband [composer] Jeff Richmond and I, [along with lyricist] Nell Benjamin, have been working on it."

When pushed by New York Times' journalist Melena Ryzik further, Tina confirmed: "Yes, yes [it's happening]!"

The 2004 cult movie starred Lindsay Lohan, Rachel McAdams, Amanda Seyfried, Lacey Chabert and Tina herself.

After Mean Girls grossed more than £90million at the worldwide box office, Paramount begged Tina to write a follow-up script. But the comedian refused to do a sequel, something that she admits she regrets.

"In general, I don't know why I didn't just try to do Mean Girls 2. Everyone does [sequels]," said Tina, speaking on The Howard Stern Show.

Fans will no doubt be excited to hear that Tina has finally given in to a musical. And with the help of Nell Benjamin, who worked on the stage adaptation of Legally Blonde, who knows what musical wonders the pair will come up with?

Perhaps a Jingle Bell Rock rendition from the four Plastics, or another foul-mouthed rap by mathlete Kevin G?
