Reports that Ellie Goulding and Dougie Poynter had split for a second time surfaced at the end of February, but it's only now that the singer, 29, has confirmed the sad news.

Speaking to The Sun just days before she kicked off her biggest tour in the UK, Ellie revealed that the past few weeks "have been tough" and that breaking up with someone is "hard" and "complicated".

Ellie Goulding and Dougie Poynter had been dating for more than two years

"People think I'm invincible but these past few weeks have been tough," she told the newspaper. "I'm not in a relationship any more and that's been hard."

The couple had been dating for two years and although they briefly reunited after a short break in December, it seems that their busy work schedules and Dougie's plans to become an actor have finally proven too much.

"Dougie is one of the most special people in the world and I'm so happy for him. He's doing well in LA and he's still one of my best friends. I know he feels the same."

She continued: "Everyone knows that breaking up with someone is a really terrible thing. It's hard, complicated and it’s never going to be easy."

Ellie also revealed she feels lucky that the split happened whilst she was on tour, as it has helped take her mind off it but surprisingly confesses that once it's over, she wants to take a year off.

"My plan is to have a month off in August and do more of my charity stuff and then next year I need to live a bit. Who knows? My situation has changed," she tells The Sun.

The singer follows in Ed Sheeran's steps who announced last year that he was taking a break from social media and going traveling.

"Hello all. I’m taking a break from my phone, emails and all social media for a while, I’ve had such an amazing ride over the last 5 years but I find myself seeing the world through a screen and not my eyes so I’m taking this opportunity of me not having to be anywhere or do anything to travel the world and see everything I missed," he told his 16million Twitter and 5.5million Instagram followers.
