Idris Elba said he had made his mother "very happy" as he collected his OBE for services to drama on Friday. The Luther star's mum Eve watched on proudly as her son was awarded with the honour during an investiture ceremony at Buckingham Palace.

The 43-year-old shared a photo of himself and his mother outside the palace following the service, writing: "@BritishMonarchy made my mum very happy today!!"

Idris Elba said he had made his mum "very happy" after receiving an OBE

He had earlier told fans that he would be "flying the East End flag" during the ceremony, which was presented by the Duke of Cambridge. Idris looked dapper as he stood by his car in a smart blue suit ahead of his journey to the palace.

"Flying the East End flag at Buckingham Palace today!!! OBE Day… How does the boy look? Feeling Proppa …:)," Idris wrote.

Idris had previously said it was "beyond special" to be recognised for his acting when the Queen's New Year's Honours list was announced.

Idris received an OBE in recognition of his services to drama

"Awards and honours come in all shapes and sizes and all as significant as the other but this is beyond special, as it comes from Queen and country and I couldn't be more proud for receiving this right now, what a year… On my head son!" he said.

Professionally it has been an incredible start to the year for Idris, who won two awards at the SAG Awards in January. He was also nominated for awards at the Golden Globes, BAFTAs and Critics' Choice Television Awards, with many suggesting that he should have also received an Oscars nod for his performance in Beasts of No Nation.

His personal life has also made headlines in recent weeks after it emerged Idris had split from his long-term girlfriend Naiyana Garth. The actor, 43, has reportedly moved out of the London home he shared with Naiyana and their young son Winston, and is said to be living in a nearby apartment so he can remain close to his little boy.
