At the age of 71, Rod Stewart is enjoying fatherhood more than ever before. The rock star has revealed that he is feeling in his prime, and he has his supportive wife Penny Lancaster, who he married in 2007, to thank.

"She literally did bring us [the family] altogether," said Rod, who has eight children from different relationships.

"For some of the kids when she first came into my life, they obviously thought, 'oh money grabber' or whatever and protecting their dad which is quite normal, but she's won them over entirely now. Really, really, she really has, she's a great girl."

Rod, who was speaking on Lorraine, added: "I've got eight children and I think I am appreciating it more now in old age than I ever did before. I really cherish those moments.

"They don't want to go to bed, any excuse to stay up, 'Oh dad I think the house is on fire'…. Anything to get your attention."

When asked whether he would have more children, Rod insisted: "No, no, no, no. I've got a hockey player, I've got a musician, I've got a ballet dancer, a jazz dancer – they are all pursuing wonderful careers in the arts. Extremely proud of them."

Rod and his third wife Penny, 44, have two sons together – Alastair, ten, and five-year-old Aiden. The couple began dating in 1999 and welcomed their children before officially tying the knot in Portofino, Italy in June 2007.

Next year Rod and Penny plan to return to the same seaside village to renew their wedding vows on their tenth anniversary. The couple will invite the same friends and "do it all over again", Rod has previously said on Loose Women.

Among the guests will no doubt be Ronnie Wood, Rod's close friend, who is expecting twin girls with his wife Sally Humphreys.

"He doesn't know what's going to happen to him," said Rod. "I laugh every time I think of it. I must admit it was me and Penny that was pushing for them to have children. I'm sure Sally wanted them but she just needed a spokesman and she got it in me."
