Ben Affleck opened up about the breakdown of his marriage to Jennifer Garner during an appearance on The Ellen DeGeneres Show this week. The 43-year-old actor, who split from his wife of 10 years in June, was clearly uncomfortable discussing his private life, but wanted to make it clear that their three children - Violet, Seraphina and Samuel - are the pair's top priority. "So I know it's been kind of a challenging year, obviously," Ellen said, as she touched upon the topic of the spilt. "And what I love and I think what everybody loves is that you and Jen are putting the kids first and that we see you with the kids all the time, and I think that's the most important thing and the most important message to send everybody."

Ben Affleck spoke to Ellen DeGeneres about the breakdown of his marriage

"Absolutely," replied Ben. "You know, we're good friends and we're doing our best and our kids are fabulous, and we're working our best for them. "The Oscar winner then moved on to the subject of his new movie Batman v Superman – and revealed his four-year-old son Samuel played a big part in his decision to take on the role. "I haven't done anything that my kids can see for a long time, so I thought that would be kind of cool. My son thinks it's really cool. He came to the set, he saw me, he was a little bit suspicious. He was like, 'Is that the real Superman?'" Ben said with a smile.

"He's four so to him that's the real Superman. When I leave, he's like, 'Dad are you going to the Batcave?' So I'm like, 'Yes, I am.' And I know eventually he's going to be in therapy, like, 'He lied! To me, there's no Batcave, he's doing Ellen!'"Ben's appearance comes just a few days after he spoke for the first time about Jennifer's revealing Vanity Fair interview. "She's allowed to talk about it," he told the New York Times. "She felt like she wanted to discuss it and get it out there and get it over with, so she could say, 'Look, I already talked about it – I don't want to do it again'"."Jen's great. She's a great person," he added. "We're on great terms. I just saw her this morning, so that's the reality that I live in."

Both Ben and Jennifer have spoken about the importance of putting their children first

In her interview, Jennifer echoed Ben's sentiments that their children are the most important thing. "The main thing is these kids—and we're completely in line with what we hope for them," she said. "Sure, I lost the dream of dancing with my husband at my daughter's wedding. But you should see their faces when he walks through the door."And if you see your kids love someone so purely and wholly, then you're going to be friends with that person."
