David Cameron says he is 'shocked and concerned' after Brussels tragedy

David Cameron has said the British government will do "everything we can to help" after the series of explosions in Brussels on Tuesday morning. The Prime Minister tweeted to say he was "shocked and concerned" about the incidents, which are reported to have claimed the lives of 26 people and injured many more.

"I am shocked and concerned by the events in Brussels. We will do everything we can to help," Mr Cameron wrote, adding: "I will be chairing a COBRA meeting on the events in Brussels later this morning."

The tragedy occurred at Zaventem airport shortly after 8am local time (7am GMT). Two explosions went off in the busy departures area, reportedly killing 11 people and leaving 81 people injured.

Around an hour later there was another explosion at Maalbeek metro station, close to the EU institutions, which is reported to have caused 15 fatalities and injured a further 55 people.

Belgium has now raised its terror threat to the highest level and the country's prime minister, Charles Michel, has warned the Belgian public to "avoid any movement" for the time being.

A tweet from the Belgian Royal Palace said: "Shocked by odious attacks in Brussels national and Brussels metro. Our thoughts go to victims, families and emergency services."

The King and Queen of Spain also said they were "dismayed" by the attacks in a message of support posted on the official Twitter account for the royal palace.

"Dismayed by the attacks in the capital of Europe #Brussels. Our solidarity and support to Belgium, its institutions and the Belgian people."

Mayor of London Boris Johnson also spoke out after the tragedy, writing: "Shocked and saddened by events in Brussels – the thoughts of Londoners are with the victims this morning."

Martin Schulz, president of the European Parliament, described the attacks as "heinous".

"My thoughts with #Brussels and its citizens after these heinous attacks," he tweeted. "Stay in a safe place, follow instructions of authorities."
