Who will inherit Prince's £103million estate?

April 26, 2016

Prince's huge fortune may be divided between his siblings, according to reports. The Raspberry Beret singer is not believed to have left a will, meaning his estimated £103million ($150million) fortune will be shared between his family.

TMZ reports that the musician did not have a will as recently as 2014, and sources close to the star say he had no interest in drafting one. If the reports are true, under Minnesota state law his closest living relatives would inherit an equal share in his estate.

Prince reportedly didn't write a will

It had previously been assumed that Prince's sister Tyka Nelson would inherit the majority of his estate. However, in Minnesota, where the musician lived, half-siblings are treated the same as full siblings and would be equally entitled to a share of the inheritance.

Prince had eight brothers and sisters, but only Tyka Nelson was a full sibling. The musician's father had three daughters and two sons from a previous relationship before Prince and Tyka were born, and after his parents separated, Prince's mum went on to welcome two more sons – Alfred and Omarr.

Two of his siblings have since died, but if they had children they would also be entitled to the same share as their parents.

"All of that is being worked out with the family and lawyers and attorneys," Prince's longtime collaborator Sheila E. told Entertainment Tonight of the negotiations.

In a statement following the service, Prince's publicist Yvette Noel-Schure confirmed that fans would never know the 57-year-old's final resting place.

"A few hours ago, Prince was celebrated by a small group of his most beloved family, friends and his musicians, in a private, beautiful ceremony to say a loving goodbye," she said. "Prince's remains have been cremated and their final storage will remain private. We ask for your blessings and prayers of comfort for his family and close friends at this time."

The statement continued: "The cause of death remains unknown and it will be at least four weeks before we receive the results of the autopsy. An announcement will be made at a future date for a musical celebration."
