They added that nobody knew what had prompted the altercation, but it was believed to have been something small that spiralled out of control.

Susan was waiting for a flight back to her home in Glasgow at the time, and her spokesperson has since said the disturbance is no cause for concern.

The spokeswoman said: "Susan is absolutely fine and is on her way home to Scotland by other means."

A Metropolitan Police spokeswoman said: "Police were called at around 1.20pm on Monday April 25 to a lounge in Terminal 5, Heathrow to reports of a distressed woman. Officers attended and spoke with the woman."

Susan previously sparked concern for her wellbeing after she was reportedly spotted shouting for help at Derry airport in Northern Ireland in March. At the time she was led into a private room by staff who comforted her.

A friend of Susan's suggested at the time that the I Dreamed a Dream singer felt "vulnerable and upset" travelling alone. However she told The Mirror that Susan has a lot of exciting projects to look forward to in the next 12 months, including the release of her new album.

"She's got lots of great things planned for this year and will start recording her seventh album next month," the source said. "She's in a great place, with people who love and care about her looking out for her back home."
