Russell Crowe has revealed details of a dinner date with Ryan Gosling that went awry thanks to his then-wife Danielle Spencer. Russell, who stars with Ryan in the upcoming comedy Nice Guys, opened up about their first meeting during an appearance on The Ellen DeGeneres Show this week. "I watched like three of his movies in a row at one point… and I thought this kid's really spectacular. So I wanted to reach out to him and say hello to him, and we made this little arrangement to get together and talk about a particular project," Russell began.

Russell Crowe has revealed details of his 'intimate' dinner with Ryan Gosling

"Just a quiet little intimate dinner. Me and my wife, I was married at the time, and you and your lady. And he was like cool, that would be so cool, just the four of us. "So I told my wife, on this date we are going to have dinner with Ryan Gosling. She goes, oh cool, she didn't really say much. But on the day, I was talking to her and she had invited 12 of her girlfriends.

"So I've told this idea to Ryan that he's going to be having this little intimate dinner but now I've got my wife and 12, plus her mother. Her mother is now coming to the dinner and I'm like you can't do that. You can't do that! Well, I can't have him walk into the room with his girlfriend where there's like 16 women. "So, I rebalanced it. I started calling blokes. I called RZA from the Wu-Tang Clan. I called Eli Roth, I called all these friends and got them all together. So Ryan walks into the room expecting this intimate dinner party, and there's 30 people. I didn't get to explain to him why until a couple of years later when we actually started working together. I said, 'Look mate you got to go along with the wife!'"

Ryan and Russell recently starred in a 'couples therapy' sketch together

Russell, 52, and Ryan, 35, clearly get along incredibly well. They have been pulling out all the stops to promote their new movie, recently starring in a funny sketch together which they shared on Twitter. The clip shows the co-stars openly airing their grievances about one another in a faux therapy session, during which they address Russell's "deep well of unaddressed anger", and Ryan's annoying habit of leaving his own memorabilia leaving around.
