Zac Efron on being sober, his career and getting naked on camera

May 19, 2016

He's one of the biggest movie stars in the world right now, but Zac Efron's success hasn't come without its struggles. After spending some time in a rehabilitation centre in 2013, the former High School Musical star changed his outlook on life and has never looked back.

Zac shot to fame when he was just 18-years-old, after starring as Troy Bolton in the hit film trilogy, with the first becoming the most successful Disney Channel Original Movie ever, and the third taking more than £110million at the Box Office.

Zac Efron opened up about changing his life after rehab

But being exposed to that kind of fame so young had an impact on Zac, now 28. Speaking to Elle, he explains: "There was a moment when my morning routine was, like, get up and Google yourself. But that stopped, dramatically and instantly, probably three years ago. I realised that viewing yourself through other people's pictures is not living your own life. I wasn't really being myself."

Since HSM, Zac has gone on to star in many more hit films, including romantic drama The Lucky One, and comedies Dirty Grandpa and Neighbours (stylised as Bad Neighbours in the UK).

His topless scenes are now discussed in his movie contracts

These days Zac tries to face up to his fears as much as possible. Recalling a recent diving trip in Hawaii, he revealed he came face-to-face with a shark – but refused to back down from the sea predator.

He continues: "I could either turn back and try to beat the shark to the boat, or I could look it in the eye and let it know I'm present and I'm not afraid. It went right past me, and I put my hand out and I actually rode the shark for 10 or 15 seconds."

Thanks to the types of characters he plays now, Zac has gained a lot of admiration worldwide for his very fit body. Because of this, he confessed his naked scenes are often stipulated in the contracts beforehand, like many Hollywood actresses.

Zac adds: "I mean, I guess there's a similar thing. Let's just say I'm not opposed to anything."
