Few could have predicted that marriage would be on the cards for Johnny Depp and Amber Heard in 2011 as the Kentucky-born actor was happily in a relationship with his long-time love Vanessa Paradis. While Johnny and Vanessa never tied the knot, they became parents to daughter Lily-Rose Melody Depp and son Jack Christopher Depp III during their 14 years together. After months of speculation the couple announced that they had split in June 2012.

Amber, who came out as bisexual in 2010, was also in a relationship in 2011. The actress had been dating photographer Tasya van Ree since 2008, although the pair split after four years together.

Amber and Johnny first crossed paths when they starred alongside one another in The Rum Diary. The film saw Amber playing Chenault, a love interest of Johnny's character Kemp. The characters later marry.

Along with the rest of the cast, Amber and Johnny made a string of red carpet appearances to promote the film, although they didn't start dating until 2012.

Almost two years later, as 2014 got underway, rumours began to swirl that the couple were engaged. In the same week that Amber was seen trying to conceal a large diamond on her ring finger, news that the couple were set to wed became official when a representative for the duo confirmed the engagement.

In February 2014, fans of the couple were given an insight into just how close Amber had become to Johnny's children when she was photographed enjoying a girlie shopping trip with 14-year-old Lily Rose.

Laughing and smiling, the pair were seen chatting animatedly over a late lunch before heading to Fred Segal together for a fashion fix.

Amber let her huge engagement ring do all the talking when she stepped out with husband-to-be Johnny at the premiere of her film 3 Days To Kill. Johnny and Amber's fans were thrilled to see the diamond that sealed the deal for the couple after two years of dating.

Soon after Amber debuted her glittering ring, Johnny decided to wear the sparkler himself during a trip to Beijing. "The fact that I'm wearing a chick's ring on my finger is probably a dead giveaway," he said, when quizzed on whether he was definitely set to wed Amber. "Not very subtle."

Still wearing Amber's ring, Johnny finally opened up about the woman who had won his heart in a TV interview and explained that the ring had been too big for his "wonderful" bride-to-be to wear. "She's sharp as a tack," he said of Amber. "A southern belle and sweet as can be, and very good for me."

On 3 February 2015, Johnny and Amber held a small private wedding ceremony at their home in Los Angeles, according to People magazine. The newlyweds then headed to Johnny's island in the Bahamas to celebrate their union with family and friends. Around 50 guests attended the party on Little Hall's Pond Cay, a six-beach retreat that Johnny bought in 2004 for £2.4million. His new bride reportedly wore a stunning Stella McCartney gown for the special occasion.

Just a couple of months after their wedding, it was time to get back to work for the Black Mass star.

Johnny and Amber were pictured touching down in Australia in April 2015, where the actor was due to film the latest instalment of the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise.

Their trip was marred after Johnny and Amber landed themselves in hot water with the Australian authorities.

The couple had brought their two Yorkshire terriers Boo and Pistol into Queensland by private jet, without complying to quarantine laws.

Minister for agriculture Barnaby Joyce responded by ordering the couple to leave the country with their pets, otherwise the dogs would be put down.

Almost a year later, Amber pleaded guilty to avoiding false documentation.

The actress, who initially faced a possible ten-year jail term for illegally bringing her dogs into Australia, reportedly claimed that she thought Johnny's staff had dealt with travel forms for her pets.

The couple then put on a united front and issued a video apology, in which they also urged tourists to "declare everything when you enter Australia".

"Australia is free of many pests and diseases that are common place around the world," said Amber. "That is why Australia has to have such strong biosecurity laws. I am truly sorry Pistol and Boo were not declared. Protecting Australia is important."

Meanwhile, the couple weren't shy about showing their affection for each other.

In September 2015 at the Venice Film Festival, seven months into their marriage, Johnny and Amber couldn't keep their eyes and hands off each other as they walked the red carpet.

Amber, 30, also spoke about becoming a stepmum to Johnny's two children.

"It's an honour and the greatest, most surprising gift I have ever received in my life," the actress told Marie Claire.

"I feel new flavours that I didn't know existed. New colours that I didn't know existed have been added to my life. I'm so happy."

In January 2016, their marriage looked to be on track as Johnny and Amber put on a very sweet display at the HEAVEN Gala presented by Vivienne Westwood and Andreas Kronthaler in Los Angeles.

At the Grammys in February, the couple looked their usual close selves as Amber supported her husband Johnny during his performance with his band The Hollywood Vampires onstage.

The couple weren't pictured together until April, when they flew back to Australia to attend a court session concerning their pet dogs.

Just days later in mid-April 2016, Amber celebrated her 30th birthday without her husband Johnny.

Instead, the pretty blonde rang in her big day with a small group of girlfriends at The Parker Hotel in Palm Springs, according to People.

A source said that the girls relaxed poolside and "looked to be enjoying themselves".

At the beginning of May, Amber once again stepped out solo at the Met Gala in New York.

Similarly in May, Johnny was on the promotional trail for his new film Alice Through the Looking Glass, unaccompanied by his wife.

Their split was announced just 15 months into their marriage in 2016. Amber filed for divorce from the film star in Los Angeles Superior Court, citing irreconcilable differences. She listed the date of their separation as Sunday 22 May.

According to TMZ, Johnny, 52, filed legal documents of his own asking the judge to reject Amber's claim for spousal support, as they married with no prenup in place. The star is said to be worth around £272million.
