The people of Prince's hometown have found a unique way to pay tribute to the star on what would have been his 58th birthday. State Governor Mark Dayton has declared that Tuesday 7 June will be known as "Prince Day" in Minnesota, and urged locals to wear purple in memory of the musician.
The official day has been instated to pay tribute to Prince's contributions to music and entertainment, along with his charity work.

Prince's birthday has also been recognised by music streaming service Tidal, who have uploaded 15 albums from the star, including previously unreleased recordings and B-sides which span from 1987 to 1996.
The Purple Rain singer was a vocal supporter of Jay Z's music subscription service, and offered his albums Hitnrun and Hitnrun Phase Two as exclusives in 2015. In a statement announcing his decision, Prince said: "After one meeting, it was obvious that Jay Z and the team he has assembled at Tidal recognise and applaud the effort that real musicians put into their craft to achieve the very best they can at this pivotal time in the music industry.

"Secondly, Tidal have honoured us with a non-restrictive arrangement that once again allows us to continue making art in the fashion we've grown accustomed to and we're extremely grateful for their generous support."
The commemorations in honour of Prince's birthday come just days after the musician's cause of death was revealed. A report released by the Midwest Medical Examiner's Office confirmed that Prince died after overdosing on the painkiller fentanyl at his Paisley Park estate.
The report also revealed that Prince weighed just 112lbs at the time of his death, and said that there were no other "significant conditions" that contributed to his sudden passing at the age of 57.
