Matt Cardle opens up about Ed Sheeran lawsuit

June 10, 2016

Matt Cardle has distanced himself from the lawsuit in which Ed Sheeran is being sued for almost £14million. Although the Lego House singer has been accused of copying Amazing, which was released by Matt in 2010,  the X Factor winner has claimed that Ed "100% deserves all of his success."

Songwriters Martin Harrington and Thomas Leonard filed the lawsuit against the pop star after claiming that his hit single Photograph copied their song Amazing with 39 identical notes. In the writ, the pair claim that the song is "verbatim, note-for-note copying" their single.

It continued: "The similarity of words, vocal style, vocal melody, melody and rhythm are clear indicators that Photograph copies Amazing. The similarities go beyond substantial, which is itself sufficient to establish copyright infringement and are in fact striking.

"Given the striking similarity between the chorus of Amazing and Photograph, the defendants knew they were infringing on a pre-existing musical composition. The copying is breath-taking in its deliberateness, magnitude, and hubris."

Despite providing the vocals for Amazing, Matt distanced himself from the lawsuit, saying: "This is not my lawsuit. I think Ed Sheeran is a genius and 100% deserves all his success."

A spokesperson for the star declined to comment, saying: "We don't comment on litigation." Ed has also kept his silence across his social media channels after leaving Twitter and Instagram in December 2015.

At the time, he said: "Hello all. I'm taking a break from my phone, emails and all social media for a while, I've had such an amazing ride over the last 5 years but I find myself seeing the world through a screen and not my eyes so I'm taking this opportunity of me not having to be anywhere or do anything to travel the world and see everything I missed."
