The Voice US contestant Christina Grimmie killed aged 22

Christina Grimmie, a former contestant on The Voice US, has been shot dead after a concert in Florida on Friday night. The 22-year-old was attacked by an unidentified gunman as she signed autographs for fans backstage at the Plaza Live Theater at around 10.45pm local time.

The gunmen was tackled to the ground by Christina's brother Mark before turning the gun on himself in front of around 60 young fans.

Christina was initially taken to Orlando Regional Medical Center in a critical condition, but later died from her injuries. The sad news was announced in a statement released by the singer's publicist.

"It is with a heavy heart that we can confirm that Christina has passed and went home to be with the Lord. She was shot at her show in Orlando and, unfortunately didn't survive the gunshot wounds," the statement said.

Nick Jonas paid tribute to the young singer on Instagram

Christina came third in season six of The Voice US and was a popular YouTube star, with over three million subscribers to her channel.

Before Christina's death was announced, Adam Levine, her mentor on The Voice, said he was "praying" for her recovery. Sharing a photo of himself and Christina together, Adam wrote: "I'm sad, shocked and confused. We love you so much Grimmie. We are all praying hard that you can pull through this… this just isn't fair."

Later, as it was confirmed that Christina had sadly passed away, the hashtag #RIPChristina began trending on Twitter, with stars including Demi Lovato and Nick Jonas paying tribute to the singer.

"#RIPChristina my thoughts and prayers are with her loved ones…" Demi wrote.

Nick took to Instagram to share a photo of himself with the talented singer, captioned with a broken emoji and "#ripchristina".
