Celebrities react to the EU referendum result

June 24, 2016

Just like us, celebrities took to social media in drones to share their thoughts after the UK woke up to Brexit on Friday morning. J.K. Rowling, Gary Lineker and James Corden were among those who mused on Twitter – and the result has divided a nation.

Making her view very clear, the Harry Potter author wrote: "I don't think I've ever wanted magic more. Scotland will seek independence now. Cameron's legacy will be breaking up two unions. Neither needed to happen."

James' tweet undoubtedly struck a chord with many, with The Late Late Show host commenting: "I can't get my head around what's happening in Britain. I'm so sorry to the youth of Britain. I fear you've been let down today."

But, in a sea of social comments loaded with anger and despair, football pundit Gary Lineker attempted a joke. He said: "U kip for a couple of hours and look what happens. What have we gone and done?"

Of course there are just as many celebrities who are happy with the result. Elizabeth Hurley shared a snap of her snoozing, and added: "Long, emotional night. Sweet dreams. #Brexit."

And Boy George tried to become the voice of reason with his 'glass half full' attitude. He wrote: "There's no use crying over spilt milk. We'll have to make the best of it!"

David Cameron announced his plans to resign

Britain is the first state to ever leave the EU, and it will take a minimum of two years for the exit to fully come into effect. While Britain must abide by EU treaties and laws during this time, it will have no say in any decision making.

Shortly after 8am on Friday morning, Prime Minister David Cameron announced his plans to resign. The Conservative leader will step down in October.
