Beyoncé is the queen of surprises! Months after sharing her secret album Lemonade with the unsuspecting public, the superstar stunned fans when she stepped out on stage at the 2016 BET Awards on Sunday night to deliver a show-stopping performance of her song Freedom.
Dressed in a black lace sequinned bodysuit, and supported by dancers in body paint, the star danced across a stage covered in water as she belted out the track. She was soon joined by Kendrick Lamar, who guests on the song, and the pair worked the crowd up into an excited frenzy as they danced and sang together during their surprise appearance.

There were whispers that Mrs Carter could be making an appearance at the show when eagle-eyed fans spotted some of her backing dancers walking the red carpet ahead of the ceremony. But nothing could have prepared fans for Beyoncé's high-energy performance as she opened the awards.
The 34-year-old singer was nominated for five trophies at the event – and while she did win the majority of them, she was unable to accept, having gone straight from the stage to the airport to catch a flight to London for the next stop of her Formation World Tour.

It was her proud mum Tina Knowles-Lawson who accepted the awards on her daughter’s behalf. Inspired by the tributes throughout the night – Prince and Muhammed Ali were both honoured – Tina spoke about some of the big names in music lost in 2016, and urged the crowd to show current artists their appreciation while they still can. "Let's let them smell the flowers while they are still alive," she said.
