The truth behind Beyoncé's 'Becky with the good hair' has been revealed

August 4, 2016

Following the release of Beyoncé's single Sorry, which contains lyrics accusing a partner being unfaithful with "Becky with the good hair," speculation has been rife as to who the elusive 'Becky' is in real life. Rita Ora, fashion designer Rachel Roy and even Chris Martin have all been mentioned as possible candidates, but Beyoncé's collaborator Diana Gordon has now revealed that the Becky character was actually her own idea, and doesn't relate to the To The Left singer's personal life.

Speaking to Entertainment Weekly about the reaction to the lyric, the high-profile songwriter said: "I laughed, like this is so silly. Where are we living? I was like, 'What day in age from that lyric do you get all of this information?' Is it really telling you all that much, accusing people?"

Diana revealed that "Becky with the good hair" isn't based on a real person

She also revealed how Beyoncé reacted to the audience's strong response to the lyric, saying: "I don't think she expected it. I saw her at her Formation tour. She had a pyjama party; we laughed, we danced, we hugged it out.

"But I didn't say much about it at the time because I wanted to give her space. The idea started in my mind but it's not mine anymore. It was very funny and amusing to me to watch it spread over the world."

Diana also revealed that she wrote Daddy Lessons from Beyoncé's album Lemonade, and that Beyoncé called the song "her life" after the music veteran first played it to her. She said: "When I played it for her, I was like, 'This is one of my favourite songs.' She was like, 'This is my life.'

"She went and reproduced it, she changed some words, added the bridge, it's hers. She didn't talk to me about her father. We didn't go into details. I see their relationship in the media just like everyone else."
