Hugh Grant opens up about his 2007 breakdown: 'I couldn't stop crying for three weeks'

August 5, 2016

Hugh Grant has recalled the dark period in his life when he couldn't stop crying for three weeks and admitted to being "mad". The Notting Hill star said he suffered an apparent breakdown down after holidaying in the Maldives.

The actor said he had "about 30 massages a day" out of extreme boredom. During an appearance on The Late Late Show with James Corden, he said: "I went mad in 2007. I got massaged into madness."

It wasn't until Hugh, 55, was flying back home that he realised something else was the matter.

Hugh Grant said he would burst into tears for three weeks

"I got on the plane to go home, open a newspaper reading the football results – and burst into tears," he said. "And I couldn't stop crying for three weeks. It was completely absurd.

"I'd go to a cafe and they'd say, 'You want skimmed milk or regular?' and I'd burst into tears. So I went to see shrinks then."

The dad-of-four even went to see a hypnotist – to no success. It left him feeling "tense as a toad" rather than relaxed.

The dad-of-four joked that he "can't stop having children"

"I'm totally miserable and self-conscious but because I'm English and polite I can't say that so I go, 'Yes, I'm very relaxed,'" said Hugh.

The actor also half-joked about expanding his brood. Hugh, who has two children with his ex Tinglan Hong and two more with his current partner Anna Eberstein, said that he "can't stop having children".

The handsome Brit became a dad for the fourth time last December, when his on-off girlfriend Anna, a Swedish TV producer, gave birth to a daughter – the couple's second child.

Hugh went from having no children to having four children in just four years. His and Anna's eldest is a boy, called John Mungo, while Hugh and Tinglan also share a daughter Tabitha and a son Felix.

Felix was born three months after John – meaning that both women were pregnant at the same time.

At the time, the actor wrote on Twitter: "In answer to some journos. Am thrilled my daughter now has a brother. Adore them both to an uncool degree. They have a fab mum."

When his first child Tabitha was born, Hugh's spokesman confirmed: "He and the mother had a fleeting affair, and while this was not planned, Hugh could not be happier or more supportive. He and the mother have discussed everything and are on friendly terms."
