Iman has taken to Instagram to share a very rare photograph of her daughter Lexi Bowie. "Happy sweet 16th birthday to my baby girl Lexi! Stay sweet 'Classy with a hint of sassy' #selfportrait #LexiLove," the proud mum captioned the black and white image.

Lexi, whose father was the late British music icon David Bowie, has lived most of her life out of the spotlight. Nevertheless, she seems to have inherited her parents' poise in front of the camera, looking effortlessly beautiful in the close-up snapshot.

David and supermodel Iman welcomed Lexi, their only child together in 2000, and her birth had a profound effect on her father, who chose to withdraw from the public eye and focus his attention on his family.

Just 17 days after Lexi's birth, the proud couple introduced their daughter – full name Alexandria Zahra Jones - to the world through the pages of HELLO! for what David said would be "her first and last interview".

She was a much-longed for second child for both; David was also a father to son Duncan from his first marriage, while Iman has a daughter named Zulekha Haywood from her previous relationship with basketball player Spencer Haywood.

The arrival of their first child together was, said Iman, "the happiest of times in my life". She added: "We've always been very close, but if it's possible we've been drawn even closer. There's a joy or a contentment that's almost palpable to both of us. Overnight, our lives have been enriched beyond belief."

The couple chose to raise their little girl in Manhattan, where the family were able to maintain a relatively normal life, with David often seen walking Lexi to and from school.

Sadly their happy family unit was torn apart on 10 January this year, when David passed away from cancer at the age of 69 – but there is no doubt how proud David would have been to see his daughter celebrate her special day.
