Greg Rutherford's sweet family reunion at airport after Rio

August 17, 2016

Members of Team GB are gradually returning to the UK as the Rio Olympics draw to an end this week. Greg Rutherford and Mark Cavendish were spotted touching down at Heathrow airport on Wednesday, where they were greeted by fans and their families.

Greg, who is taking home a bronze medal for long jump, was pictured scooping his son Milo into his arms. The little boy and his mum Susie Verrill, Greg's long-term partner, had stayed at home amid fears over the Zika virus.

Greg looked thrilled to be back on home soil, still sporting his Team GB top with pride. He kept his medal safely packed away.

He thanked all those who had supported him, writing: "It's helped me realise actually what this beautiful medal means not just to me but to everyone who invests energy in supporting #teamGB.

The athlete had safely packed away his bronze medal

"I will forever wonder what if with this competition, but in all honesty with the injuries I've had this year an Olympic Bronze is arguably the best I could have hoped for. I'm flying back tonight and finally get to see my family again tomorrow. Thank you all again. This medal is for every single one of you."

Greg, 29, had previously expressed some disappointment at receiving a bronze, which he admitted "may sound mad to some". But the following day he tweeted: "Starting to feel a bit more positive. These things are beautiful no matter what colour."

Mark Cavendish was also spotted returning with his family

Mark Cavendish was also spotted returning to the UK with his family. The cyclist travelled with his wife Peta, the couple's two children Delilah and Frey, and Peta's son Finnbar from her previous relationship.

Mark proudly wore his silver medal, which he received in the men's omnium, around his neck. The 31-year-old happily stopped for photos with fans and also posed with Team GB's men's rugby sevens team.
