Katy Perry has expressed her sympathy for a man who strongly believed they had been dating for six years. In an episode of Catfish last week, Spencer Morrill described to presenters Nev Schulman and Max Joseph how he thought he had been exchanging emails and text messages with the pop singer for over half a decade, leading him to go so far as to spend a quarter of his savings on an engagement ring to give to her.
During an appearance on SiriusXM on Thursday, Katy revealed that she had been sent a link to the story, and said: "I didn't actually read it though, because I just think it is really unfortunate and very sad."
Katy Perry has expressed her sympathy for the Catfish victim
In the episode, Nev and Max had to break the news to Spencer that he had actually been communicating with a Canadian woman named Heather, who was living in London. She later offered him an apology for stringing him along.
"I just got to a point where I couldn’t imagine not talking to you," she explained, "I've been through some tough times throughout the time we've been talking the past six years. Like my dad died two years ago… I'm genuinely sorry. I can't change what I did, but I understand that it was really wrong."
"My heart goes out to him, actually," Katy said. "Because anybody that's been fooled like that or just, you know… People have dreams and people live in different parts of the world where not everything is as accessible."
The singer has been dating Orlando Bloom since January
The 31-year-old didn't fault the love-struck Tennessee man, and instead hinted that his naivety had more to do with where he's from. "Like, we live in the coast, and you know, we get stuff in a way that some other people don’t get, and so I feel bad for him," she said. "And so I didn't really like to indulge in that, because my heart would die."
Of course, in reality, Katy has been dating English actor Orlando Bloom since January – and they are clearly head-over-heels in love. According to reports, the couple are even considering getting married and starting a family together, with a source confirming: "They are serious about each other and their relationship."
