George Clooney was just as shocked as the rest of us by Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie's split. The actor, who is good friends with the couple, had apparently not heard the news when he was asked about their break-up at Tuesday's Leaders Summit on Refugees at the United Nations General Assembly in New York.

"What happened?" George asked, before being told by a CNN reporter. "I didn't know that. Wow. I feel very sorry then.

"That's a sad story and unfortunate for a family. It's an unfortunate story about a family. I feel very sorry to hear that." He added: "This is the first I've heard of it."
George and Brad became close on the set of Ocean's Eleven in 2001, and went on to star together in the film's two sequels, as well as the 2008 movie Burn After Reading.
Brad and Angelina announced on Tuesday that they were splitting after two years of marriage and a 12 year romance. Angelina filed for divorce on Monday, citing irreconcilable differences. She has asked for physical custody of the couple's six children – Maddox, Pax, Zahara, Shiloh and twins Vivienne and Knox – and requested that Brad be granted child visitation rights and joint legal custody.

"This decision was made for the health of the family. She will not be commenting, and asks that the family be given its privacy at this time," her attorney Robert Offer confirmed.
In a statement to People magazine, Brad said: "I am very saddened by this, but what matters most now is the well-being of our kids. I kindly ask the press to give them the space they deserve during this challenging time."
