Michelle Obama reveals favourite part of 'sleepover' at Buckingham Palace

September 22, 2016

Michelle Obama has revealed that one of her all time highlights of being the First Lady for the last eight years was her "sleepover" at Buckingham Palace. Chatting to Stephen Colbert on The Late Show, she opened up about the experience and praised the Palace food after ordering chips during her stay.

After Steven Colbert asked if she and the Queen painted each other's toenails during her sleepover, she joked: "Well no. It was when they hosted us for the State Dinner so if you're the guest country you stay at Buckingham Palace, but I do remember ordering French fries at the Palace. They were good. They have good fries at the palace."

The 52-year-old then candidly opened up about leaving the White House at the end of husband Barack Obama's last term as President, describing the experience at "bittersweet."

"It's definitely bittersweet. Everything is the last," she said. "I find myself choking up because we've raised our kids in the White House we've had so many amazing experiences. We have phenomenal staff, we live in a house with people who love us and care about us."

She then joked that she was already making her two daughters Malia and Sasha pack up their rooms, telling the host that she said: "If you don't pack it, I'm throwing it out!"

The First Lady previously revealed that she thought the move was going to be particularly difficult on the two teenage girls, telling Ellen DeGeneres: "I'm sure the girls will have a tough time. They think they're ready, but when you've grown up in a place...I mean, they won't be able to knock on a door and say, 'can I see my room?' That's not gonna happen.

"It's really the people. Think about it. The girls have grown up in the White House. I mean, the staff there – we see them every day. These are people who have helped us raise our kids. They've loved us. They've taken care of us. The minute we leave, that's it."
